General

1. The committee takes no responsibility for loss or damage to members prints, slides or equipment.

2. The committee reserves the right to refuse any competition entry.

3. All slides must be labelled with the title and the author's name, and must be correctly spotted.

4. All prints must be labelled with the title and the author's name, and must be mounted. The maximum mount size is 20" x 16"; there is no minimum size.

5. The photograph from which a slide or print has been made must be no more than 4 years old at the date of the competition.

Monthly Competitions

1. Monthly competitions are open to images of any type or subject.

2. A member may enter up to five prints and up to five slides.

3. Slides must be handed to the Competition Secretary a week before the competition.

4. Prints must be brought on the evening of the competition; but the titles must be handed to the Competition Secretary a week before the competition, or e-mailed to him (a@amacd.co.uk) by the Sunday before the competition.

5. The judge will place the top five prints and top five slides. Points are awarded as follows: 10 for 1st place, 7 for 2nd, 5 for 3rd, 3 for 4th, and 1 for 5th. Each member's points are totalled after the last monthly competition to determine the Print and Slide Photographer of the Year.

6. Any slide or print that has been entered in a monthly competition may not be entered in a subsequent monthly competition.

7. Any slide or print that has been entered in a monthly competition may also be entered in an annual competition.

Annual Competitions

1. Each slide or print must be entered for a particular category. The categories are:

a. Open Colour - any style or subject.

b. People - an image whose main subject is a person or people. 

c. Nature - an image whose main subject is drawn from the natural world - e.g. birds, animals, insects, plants, fossils, shells, rocks. Cultivated plants, domesticated animals and zoo animals are allowed.

d. Knutsford - limited to the area of Knutsford bounded by 30 or 40mph speed limits.

e. Pictorial - a picture where the photographer has seen more than just the subject; e.g. unusual lighting, mist, moody, atmospheric, patterns.

f. Record - a complete and accurate record of an object (e.g. building, furniture, machine); should be sharp, accurate, detailed; the title should precisely identify the subject. 

g. Open Monochrome (prints only) - any style or subject.

h. Digital (prints only) - the digital image must be obviously manipulated, in such a way that it is not a straight interpretation of the subject. 

2. A maximum of 10 prints may be submitted by each member, with a maximum of 3 prints in any category. 

3. A maximum of 18 slides may be submitted by each member, with a maximum of 4 slides in any category.

4. No entry may be entered into a subsequent annual competition. 

5. Prints and slides must be handed to the Competition Secretary a week before the relevant competition. 

6. Prints submitted to the annual competition will be kept until the autumn, so that a selection from them can be used for the annual exhibition in the Library.

Christmas Knockout Competition

1. This is an Open competition, to which each member may submit up to four prints and four slides. Titles are not necessary.

2. These prints and slides may have been previously entered in other competitions, and may be entered subsequently in other competitions. No entry may be entered in a subsequent Christmas knockout.

3. Prints may be mounted or unmounted, and may be any size. 

4. Entries must be brought on the night of the competition.

Competition for the Alan Mitchell Salver

1. Each member may submit up to 3 entries. Individual prints or slides used in this competition may also be entered in Monthly, Annual or Christmas competitions.

2. Each entry must consist of at least 3 images on a particular subject or theme. The subject will be printed in the syllabus and announced at club meetings. 

3. There are no restrictions on size or style; e.g. an entry may consist of a number of separately mounted prints, or a number of prints on a single mount. An entry may not include both prints and slides.

4. Prints and slides must be labelled with the author's name and the title(s), and the labels must show clearly the order in which the prints or slides are to be displayed.

5. Entries must be handed to the competition secretary a week before the competition.

Additional Guidance - What to look for in a photograph

• Impact
• What you see first, what has the most impact
• What creates your first impression, it could be a strong feeling of power
• What commands you to look, what holds your eye?
• The impact could be any of the element listed below
Creativity
• Using your imagination
• Being very original or a fresh approach on subject matter
• Creative cropping
• Creative use of subject matter
• Content could be very abstract
• Invention, design, feeling and imagination lifts the photograph into the realm of art
Style
• The part of the photograph that sets your work apart from the rest
• A different way of seeing
• A different way of approaching
• A brand new style
• Very real and not contrived
• Experimental
• Individuality is obtained in many different ways
Composition
• Good placement of the subject matter - a very successful arrangement
• Harmonious proportions
• Using dynamic symmetry to place most important objects
• Good rhythm is created by repetition, whether its colour, spaces, moods, or divisions of the photograph
Print presentation
• Does the presentation enhance the photograph?
• Good cropping can add to the composition
• Good colour for the matting or mount can help
• Daring to be different
• Using something dynamic or being very traditional
• Initial impression can be obtained by using creative mounting
Colour balance
• A good technique for the photograph - a good selection of colour for the subject matter or objects
• Using a very interpretative colour (maybe not normal at all)
• Creative use of colour - example: complementary colours, dark against light, strong against weak
Centre of interest
• Dominance of objects or subject matter
• A group of subject and arrangement of objects so one centre of interest prevails
• Subject matter holds the eye with no distractions
• Moody or misty
• Strength and definition gives the centre of interest
• Secondary points are very important to the photograph, but you must always be able to come back to the centre of interest
Lighting
• A good statement of light
• Good portrait lighting
• Dynamic lighting
• Pattern of light can add to the enhancement; strong mood can be created by the lighting
• Lighting is the art of reproducing the characteristics of the subjects or objects
Subject matter
• An outstanding interpretation for the subject matter
• Good camera angle for subject matter is helpful
• Selection of a photogenic model or object is important
• Contrast here can be very creative in selection - example: warm and cool, one and Paul; all of these will complement your work
Print quality
• Good strong contrast
• Using the middle tones
• Good colour balance
• Expressions and artistic lighting
• The simplest statements are the strongest
• Good angle on the building
• Backgrounds in key to the subject matter
Technique
• Different technique for the subject matter
• Technique is the foundation of photography, but a knowledge of the art principles are very necessary
• Using creative and abstract can help
• Design brings abstract ideas into concrete form
Story telling
• A good strong statement
• A complete story within the photographs
• A successful presentation
• Achievement of purpose
• First glance has a complete meaning
• Strong mood of emotion, using strong complementary colours next to each other
• Strong mood with the photograph, builds an emotional response challenging your imagination
