Society's Net catches
Japan's attention
JAPANESE fans of author
Elizabeth Gaskell have been
finding out more about Knuts-
ford -- on the Internet.
they have been combing
Knutsford Photographic
Society's own web site to dis-
cover more about the town
where Mrs Gaskell lived and
is buried.
Carol Sparkes, who set up
the Society's home page, said
she had also received elec-
tronic mail asking for pictures
of Knutsford.
"The Japanese were looking
for all references to Knutsford
on the Internet, and our home
page includes some inform-
ation about the town," said
Carol, quality manager at IT
Services in Risley.
Technology
"then they left a message
asking for pictures of Knuts-
ford to put on their web page
about Elizabeth Gaskell."
Carol teamed up with pho-
tographic society colleague
Fred McDowell, who collects
old postcards of the town.
"We decided to send them
older pictures, showing how
Mrs Gaskell-related places
used to look" said Carol.
But the pictures won't
be going to Japan by airmail.
"I will scan them electroni-
cally and send them on the In-
ternet" said Carol.
Carol set up the photo-
grahic society's web site a
year ago and has developed
photographic contacts around
the world.
"The world is getting
smaller with this type of tech-
nology," she said.
